Every automotive air conditioning system is a closed loop with a high pressure side and low pressure side. Let us begin with the high pressure side since it directs from the engine system to the passenger compartment.
The High- pressure side
The compressor is a valve run by a belt fixed to the crankshaft of the engine. When it draws the refrigerant into it, it turns into a low pressure gas form. Once the gas enters the valve, the compressor starts compressing. The belt pushes the valve, which puts the gas under pressure and drives it out of the capacitor. This device cannot press liquids, it can compress only gasses.
It is generally a radiator. It functions as similar as your car radiator does. Its primary function is to spread out the heat out of the system.
- Receiver dryer
The refrigerant needs to be prepared for the evaporator at first. When it comes out of the condenser, the fluid passes through a small water system placed in the line. This component holds drying agents, small granules that draw water. The receiver dryer takes away any water that has got into the system. If the water is allowed to stay and perhaps form ice crystals, it can affect the performance of the air conditioning system.
The Low-pressure side
- Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV)
This apparatus converts from the high-pressure side to the low pressure side. If you touch it, you can realize that it changes from hot to cold.
This is the device where the key functioning of the air conditioning system takes place. While all the other components of this cooling system are situated in the engine chamber, the evaporator is located in the cabin, generally on the passenger side footwell. It appears as similar as a radiator. It has a coil of tubes and fins. However, its job is to soak up heat rather than radiating it.
This apparatus also takes moisture out of the air in the vehicle, that helps you feel cool. The moment you halt the vehicle and see water dropping below, it is basically the water from the air conditioning evaporator and you should not concern about it.

Well, you are not right in this case. When it comes to recharging the AC, it means that fresh refrigerant will be added to your system. If your car AC has a little refrigerant, it can stop functioning and offer less cooling. If the amount of the refrigerant is really low, the rest of the refrigerant in the system needs to be removed and replaced. This is called a recharging of the AC.
